[philmont] back from PHILMONT, trek #12

I also have a few pictures from Commanche (along with a few hundred others that I need to sort through) that I will be providing to you at some point (along with descriptions/info.) We enjoyed Commanche in June on Itinerary 11, 619-E2, we had a little hail as we came into the campsite and also found some snow to play with/in. We didn't hurry to leave Cypher's Mine and had lunch at Thunder Ridge camp on our way up. (We ate a second lunch that day and then cooked a dinner for lunch when we got to Clear Creek as we pulled in there around 10:30 the next day.) I assume the same relatively unfriendly, loud music staff at Cito that I met were the ones that Kim met too. It was raining out so the indoor stuff was the only option. The CD there even came into the climbing gym (before we had a chance to notice the lethargic staff) and told them they were to get up off their (lazy) butts and interact with our crew (who were having fun but receiving no direction or instruction) and then left and the staff (2 male and 2 female) didn't ever act like 'the boss' had ever been there. We had fun anyway but it was by far the most disappointing of any of the staff groups we interacted (or tried to interact) with. (I will say, OTHER than the conservation couple that we saw at several points on our trek including after we returned to CHQ and as much as I tried to be friendly, they didn't act like I deserved the time of day from them.) Hope Comanche was more of a "camp" this year than last, they moved it while we were on the trail .. it was pretty rough. We had a great experience at Hunting Lodge as well, just a really friendly staff. We had a birthday boy that day and so they baked him a cake and brought it down to the campsite ... a special moment. I could use a couple of pictures that you might have - A campsite or other photos for Comanche and a campsite photo for Upper Clarks Fork. Please include the Photographers name, location where the photo was taken, Troop # (including city & state), trek #, expedition number and year so I can include proper photo credit. Rain 8 out of 10 days, though only really bad one afternoon, and 2 nights. My least favorite camp, Commanche Camp. That was the night we had to dry out boots and socks from the rain that afternoon hiking north from Phillips Junction. BEST part of trek for CREW --- Hunting Lodge. It started to rain really hard during Advisor coffee. Boys were coming up for cobbler made by staff. It rained so hard, the staff invited us (and crew on same trek 12) IN to the Hunting Lodge. Steaff lit a fire in the fireplace and lanterns. Boys played cards, chess, scrabble IN the hunting lodge during the rain storm. Lots of thunder and lightening that night. A really special night. My #2 best part was hiking with my 24 yr old son. He filled in at the last minute (3 weeks before) as our 3rd advisor, drove down from Denver and met us at Philmont. It was actually the most time I have spent with him in the last 5 or 6 yr. We went to some of the same places as our trek in 1999, many others that were new. He was great with the scouts, most had only "met" him once, a yr ago as MC of his younger brother's Eagle COH. It was fun to hear his troop stories he shared with the boys, and also see him encourage their skills, leadership, and working as a team. He really enjoyed the sunrises/sunsets (especially on the Tooth of Time), fishing, and the beauty that is Philmont. WORST -- hiking a mile past the trail to go shoot 30.06 at Sawmill...............almost looked like someone had taken the sign off the post threw it on he ground upside down behind post on purpose. ALSO, loud music and unfriendly staff at Cimarroncito.........noted that one on our comments sheet. Conservation was not bad. trimming and sorting branches/trees stumps between Cimarroncito and Hunting Lodge. We were there mid day, and able to move tree limbs to shade to cut and make various piles, according to size. all stayed healthy, good trip home too. Health wise, this was a challenging group, 2 really small boys (one with great determination, the other our strongest hiker). Our scout with diabetes had food/insulin figured out by the 3rd day. The worst meal for him was the one with the apple cobbler and fettucine. Boys already wanting to plan a Sierra trek in northern California for next summer. THANKS again to all in this group for sharing your wealth of Philmont knowledge. This was my 3rd trek at Philmont, but I learn something new each time.
