[philmont] Comanche Camp

We passed by there late July 06. You could tell that there had been a tremendous amount of flash flood damage. There had been info available in Logistics before hitting the trail that the camp had been moved and why. We also found signs posted at the old camp indicating the way to the new re-located site. Since we were just passing through, we opted not to make the side-hike to see the new site and continued on. I don't know if any crew was there when the flood came through, but that is not a pleasant experience.
In this part of the country, floating the Missouri Ozarks comes with that problem automatically. If you camp on a gravel bar next to the river, when the water starts to rise, don't ask why....break camp and get to higher ground....NOW!!!

Well, given that it was underwater in late June, 2006 I think moving it to higher ground was basically a good idea. I was looking forward to camping along the banks of the Rayado and the hump up the hill was an unpleasent surprise. (check out the black to comanche via Phillips route in PhilSearch)

Why was Comanche Camp moved? I can remember staying there in 1981 on my first trek, and my crew did #26 in 2005 (yep, both Comanches...).

I enjoyed Comanche Camp. We stayed at the set of sites on the "west" end of the camp closest to Clear Creek. The sound of the river just outside the tent made for great sleeping.

Sounds like they did the hikers no favors in this change...

Comanche Camp was relocated early in the 2006 season from its spot along the
Rayado to a spot up the Hill off the Trail to Red Hills. No cow pies
there, but quite a hump at the end of a long day ... and to get water.
