Whew,

Am I glad that I trained for this 78 miler. Still, I panted like a wild dog
at the top of a few mountains in the beginning of the trek. My son wanted to
know if I was alright, I told him that I was an old man and for him to wait
to be at Philmont with his own son someday.

We got rained out on every day we were in the South section. Our gear and
clothes were wet most of the first week. There is no planning or training
that would have prevented that.

Here is one story.

After the 50 stream crossings from Black Mountain we rested before heading
up to Scheaffers Pass at North Fork Urraca when we got deluged by a
flash-bang lightning, rain, & hail storm. Everything that was dry, (not
much), was soon soaking wet and we had a few scouts starting to suffer from
hypothermia. We set up at North Fork Urraca when 2 Rangers passed by and
said we had to go to Miners Park to get an itinerary chage approved. Well,
HQ did not approve of the change from Scheaffers Pass to North Fork Uracca,
even though the entire camp was empty. We had to either get up to Schaeffers
Pass or down to Miners Park. We eventually went to Miners Park. Not a choice
we wanted to make since it would add that many more miles to the next day
and we were soaking wet. The staff at Miners Park were fantastic with; hot
drinks, pads, food.

Long story short, we made it and had a great time when we got in the North
Section. Sad thing was that we missed the Tooth.

Lots more stories but I just wanted to share this one.
