Yeah, I am sure I can google some kind of answer but am looking for real scout experiences.
I have an External frame pack. I have had it for a long time and it is great. I can put my stuff inside and tie on my tent, tarp, thermarest, sleeping bag, blankie, Coleman stove and the spare tire for the truck with lots of room to spare. Since the pack weighs about 6 pounds when empty I am a long way from being ultralight but at $540 for Jim's tent that ain't gonna happen soon anyway.
so on to the question.
I bought my son a new fancy internal frame pack. He has far more room in the pack than I do but once he packs food\water and maybe his sleeping bag there is really no room for the tent or Thermarest or other stuff (he tends not to need the Coleman stove or spare tire)
How do you guys deal with this? The pack simply does not lend itself well to having things hang off it and I have not seen many photos showing this done so i am wondering if the problem is with my general mindset on how to treat these things.
Others in the troop seem to have similar challenges where things are tied on in ways that look awkward compared to my trusty old setup.
