My Kelty Red Cloud has some "outside" pockets, so this may not help much:
- tent, poles, and stakes (Eureka Zeus EXO) in the large "lid" (or fanny
pack) compartment
- rain gear, pack cover, first aid kit, and other small items in the front
(back?) pocket
- trash bag (to put on the ground so I have a clean dry place to set my
pack) in the very small front pocket
- water bottles, rope, cord, fuel containers in the tall side pockets
- clothing, food, miscellaneous gear in the large main compartment
- in good weather, jacket and/or drying socks stuck outside under the lid
closure straps
- sleeping bag in lower compartment
- rolled sleeping pad and rolled ground sheet outside under the two vertical
straps that run from the bottom of the main compartment to the bottom of the
pack (over the sleeping bag compartment)
- garbage bag, cord, or other small items in the side mesh pockets
- small "essentials" -- matches, compass, camera, knife, etc. -- in a fanny
pack worn in front (above the pack's hip belt) or clipped around the top of
the pack
