[Philmont] Internal Frame Packs

Sorry, John, I have to agree with Keith. John, you just haven't tried
the right internal frame pack.

After using the infamous Philmont molded plywood packboard in 1970, I
bought my first external frame pack in 1971. I changed to a North
Face internal frame pack in college, then went back to using an
external frame pack, while trying several internal frame packs borrowed
from friends. I didn't like any of the internal frame packs, so I
stayed with the external frame. A couple of years ago, I bought an
Osprey Aether 90. This is by far the best backpack I have ever owned
in terms of comfort, adjustability and carrying capacity. Honestly, I
don't ever think about having a pack on my back while hiking with this
pack. I never thought a pack could be this comfortable.

My Aether 90 is cavernous but I think extra room is important when
hiking with kids, wives or inexperienced hikers. I want the people I
am hiking with to have a good time. If you have a Scout, child or
spouse who is having a tough time, you need to become a pack mule -
with a backpack that can handle more than your share of the gear. This
is important for a Philmont advisor and may make the difference between
a great Philmont experience and having a crew member who wants to go
home.
