Couldn't agree with you more. In 1995 we took the troop on a "50th
Anniversary" expedition to the Weminuche Wilderness in Colorado. One of our
Eagle alumni who made the trip with us, a big 20-something year-old football
player at Lamar University in Texas wrenched his knee at a stream crossing
10 or 15 miles deep in the backcountry. He was able to complete the trip on
own two feet thanks to his own courage, and the willingness of everyone to
take part of his equipment from him so that he didn't have to carry
anything. We all knew that it could have easily been any one of us.
Knowing that your buddies have your back is a great part of the Philmont
bonding experience.
It's another reason you need to be in the best shape you can when you go to
Philmont. Take that part of the oath about "keep myself physically strong"
seriously.
