[Philmont] Internal Frame Packs

I will admit that I am a convert. My pack this time was an INTERNAL frame, and I was very happy with it (have 2 prior treks with an internal frame)...........a Gregary Electra (woman's pack). Only thing not in my pack, my tent.

When I did pack checks with my scouts I had to again and again remind them they had an Internal frame, NOT an external frame. They were hanging way to many things "outside" of their pack. (cups, extra shoes, water bottles, etc.) It wasn't even stuff they would need in a hurry. I instructed them to line the pack with the 33 gallon garbage bag-- using it as ONE big sack----- put sleeping bag in the bottom, then clothes inside the bag............gear, water, rain gear outside the bag. I asked them to atleast try it that way. Many made the switch to getting most of their stuff inside.

one scout pulled the straps for the top SO TIGHT on one side, he made the frame pop out of place.....poor design on the part of REI too(Galaxy model). I wish I had noticed it sooner, with all the food and gear at Philmont. He had a pretty miserable time, fighting his pack most of our trek. The frame would just not stay in place.
