[Philmont] "Fall Into Scouting" Sale

For what it's worth, I took my Zephyr 2 AL on our 802 trek this year
and it worked out just fine. Out of the dozen or so tents (ranging
from Eureka Timberline 4 to North Face VE-24 to Bibler Bipod Bivy) I
own or have owned at various times, it's my favorite. Light, easy and
quick to set up even if you are by yourself, and I really like being
able to tie both fly flaps open and see the stars pretty well. And
despite the all-mesh design I've been out in some vicious Texas
downpours without ever getting wet. It's luxurious as a one person
tent, which is mostly the way I use it, but it worked fine as a 2
person backpacking tent at Philmont too. You can also set up the fly
and footprint without the tent if you're trying to go ultralight in
some place with no mosquitoes. I don't know if it'd hold up a great
deal of snow load, but that hasn't been a big problem for me here in
Central Texas, so I haven't actually tested that!

Other than my Zephyr, our 3 crews used a combination of Alps Mystique
2s and Extreme 2s. The X2s are heavier but are awfully sturdy - we use
them as year-round troop tents. I personally prefer the Mystiques but
some of our guys freak at the concept of a non-freestanding tent.

We also took at least a dozen Alps Denali 5500 packs (they were out of
the 4500s for most of last year or it would have been a mix of 4500s
and 5500s) and a couple of their Red Tail packs. No problems with any
of them.
