We were able to get Verizon coverage in a couple of places on Trek 16 this
year, but not in base camp.

On Fri, 17 Aug 2007 10:18:09 -0700, <andrewmchorney@cox.net> jammed all
night, and by sunrise was heard saying:

> I agree with the comments about coverage at the PTC. Verizon, even with
trimode phones, had zeo

> Phone Hill we had no coverage. Cingular people had no problems. Mr.

On my trek this year, I asked about cell phone coverage. Apparently,
Verizon has shut down the tower that services the Philmont area... and
they did that sometime in 2006. Their stated intent is to fix it, well,
eventually. But that's the apparent reason for zero coverage. And as of
July 24, it's still down.

AT&T/Cingular did fine, one of our crew had such a phone. In the back
country, it's only useful in any case up high... he got decent service
on the tops of mountains, up at Apache Camp and on top of Mt. Philps and
on the Tooth.
