6 litresof water (12lbs... one camelback 100oz, three Nalgenes),

I'm wondering if anyone needs carry 6 L of water except into a dry camp.

The whole idea of using dehydrated adn freeze dried food is to reduce water weight and add it back to the food after reaching camp. Don't carry any more water on the trail than necessary. Plenty but not an over abuncance.

There is nothing wrong with carrying an empty bottle if you don't need the water on the trail.

Recognising that everyones needs are different, I carried a 100 oz (3 L) Unbottle also and it's the finest piece of equipment I own. I'm prone to drinking a lot of water but I never sucked it dry. I carryed a 1 L Lexan bottle as a backup but never got into it during the day while hiking.

I also carried a 1 L Platy as a lightweight 1 L container if I felt the need for extra water was needed but it never was and I did not use it.

Carrying the amount of water needed and not a surplus is one good way to reduce pack weight as water weighs one pound per pint. That adds up fast.

I am not advocating not carrying sufficient water, just not a surplus of water.
