If the 'this year's trek' you are referring to is the one in Sept. you
should get serious with the stairmaster. ;>)
I can't help you in Michigan (or Ohio) but the Ouachita, Winding Stairs,
Little Missouri and even the Cedar Ridge Preserve are a little far from
Kilgore for a decent evening hike. The altitude in Kilgore isn't going to
help much either - its only 365 feet. There are probably some parks in the
area that you could try. Or you could work out with the Kilgore Rangerettes
- that should get your heart rate up. But I'm guessing the indoor gym at
the motel is your best shot.
