Philmont will be happy to work this out. This is also true of the OATC and
other programs. Heard this from several people today ,as I was thanking
people for my visit earlier during the summer. By the way, tonight was the
last closing campfire of the summer.

Subject: [Philmont] Rayado Trek limits
We have several scouts who are interested in a Rayado trek next year. We
have one scout who did Rayado two years ago and then was a ranger at
Philmont this summer. He hiked with our crews for a few days this summer
and he has encouraged several boys to apply. Is there a limit on the number
of scouts from a troop who can apply to Rayado? I know that they want to
put Rayado crews together who do not know each other, but is there a
limitation on the applications or recommendations? My inclination is to
write an honest recommendation for every boy who asks me, and then let
Philmont sort it out.
I enjoyed the pack discussion. We all had internal frame packs this summer
except for the biggest and strongest. He had an old external frame pack and
once carried two packs up a mountain, one in his hands. I love my internal
frame pack and put the tent on top of the pack and the thermarest on the
bottom, no problems. I put the Philmont food inside on top and don't
remember any damage. The only equipment I tell the boys is forbidden is an
old summer camp sleeping bag. The can't bring their Webelos sleeping bag.
But then again, nobody hiking with me has tried to bring equipment from the
1950's and 1960's.
