[Philmont] ***POSSIBLE SPAM*** Final two weeks of preparation hikes. Kilgore Texas or Geneese OH

Crocs?? Ok you could have mentioned internal- external backpacks or what stoves are best and started less controversy.

We did trek #9 and I took Crocs with the velcro heel straps because they we light, water-proof, had a toes covered and were comfortable in Austin,Texas on nice, manicured, metropolitan trails.

During our conservation, which was supposed to be creek-bed restoration, I wore my crocs and we walked about a mile to the sight. Rocks, peebles, sand, burs, and rock flakes got into my crocs easily
and I had to stop at least twice to empty them out. I was a croc disciple (read very fanatical about Crocs above everything else) before Philmont but afterwards I will use them only off trail. I suppose the
priest of Crocdom will call me a wuss, but whatever! I am going to find some semi-liteweight trail runners for my camp shoes!

When we walked the 9-12 miles from Rich Cabins to Greenwood Canyon we did like 8-10 creek crossings. The Scouts got their feet wet because they kept walking straight or followed others that did likewise. The Advisors stopped at the creek crossing looked right and left and ALWAYS found a log to cross on or a narrowing of the creek to leap across.

I suppose that Phil has much wider creeks (rivers?) where crocs are needed and I am WRONG.

Hi Shane,
Great write up on your hike- Thanks!! Have you experimented with water shoes
other than Crocs? I hadn`t really thought about having everyone get them ,
but it sounds like they are necessary , given the number of water crossings.
How long does it normally take you to drive to the trail from DFW? I think
we will be doing at least 1 Fri, Sat, Sun trip (the boys will be in school)
. Thanks again.

Pat
