[philmont] Philmont alternatives - thank you, list!

Camp Orr is really two camps in one.  The older boys can get a combo backpack / canoe 50 miler in through the Trek option while the younger boys can do the more traditional summer camp thing.  Come early in the summer and the humidity isn't that bad.

I think that some early spots are still available.

(insider hint: ask for Trail Peak campsite.  It is a bit out of the way but the view from the nearby vespers area is amazing).

One place I haven't seen mentioned, which your Buffalo River mention made me think of, is Camp Orr in Arkansas.  Not exactly a Philmont alternative, but they do have backpacking, canoe, or combo 4-5 day summer camp treks for older scouts, while younger scouts can stay in camp and do a more traditional summer camp.  (Of course that requires a little more adult support).  It's a great camp, beautiful countryside, only drawback is the humidity (which really shouldn't bother Texans too much).

The response to my request for Philmont alternatives has been great. I've
saving your suggestions, downloading information, and getting ready to turn
it all over to the SPL.

The boys had their first brainstorming session last night. One of the
things they considered was putting together our own camp in a wilderness
area, much like what John and some others suggested. We've done that in the
past, most recently in 2006 at the Buffalo National River.

Thank you again, and keep those suggestions coming!
