We use our own bear bags.
We had them custom made by Hoggans - www.hoggans.com
<http://www.hoggans.com/> .
Waterproof canvas - ~3' x ~4' with drawstrings and carabineer loops, weigh
about the same as the crappy bags Philmont gives you and they are strong
enough to bear bag a problem hiker.
I just called the guys up there, told them what I wanted, they said they
could do it, and they did. Cost about $10.00 per bag. One bag is big
enough to hold 4 days of Phil-food by itself. Smellables and the day's food
goes up in a second one as the oops bag.
We also use 700 pound test parachute cord instead of the heavy Philmont bear
ropes. We use small carabineers with a webbing we designed to attach the
ropes to trees - protects the trees much better than the Phil-rope up
against the bark itself.
I think there are some pictures of the bags in the 2005 Philmont gallery on
the Troop website linked below. I'll get some better pics and put them up
on the forum site.

Subject: [philmont] Bear Bags
Do most crews bring their own bear bags or use the Philmont supplied bags?
If a crew wanted to bring their own, what are some options that the Rangers
will accept? Thanks
