down sleeping bags at Philmont?<<<

LIke the weather at Philmont if you don't like the first answer, wait 5
minutes and you will get another one. Down bags and symthetic bags have
ardent supporters. :-))

I have done three Philtreks with one of my kids each time. Plenty of
wet days and nights. I have backpacked the GA section of the AT 3 times
with of my kids . We have used down bags all thr way and only zonce did
a down bag get wet and that was only a few drops. If you are careful
you can successfully use a down bag. My bag (subkilo 20' mummy from
REI) compresses to the size of a 16" softball and weighs (as the name
says) less than 2.2 pounds. The savings in weight and space make them
a no brainer for me and my family.

The one time I got it wet was my first backpacking trip and I had not
properly seam sealed the tent. Took the word of the salesman that the
factory seam sealing was adequate. Just a few drops of water created
a cold spot in the bag on that cold, wet, windy night that I will not
forget.
