[philmont] Sleeping Bag: Synthetic or Down?

My trek started 7-31. I had a 20 degree bag and I only got in it once. I
would take a 40 degree one pounder next time if I went the same time period.
As far as down, I would not bring it.

I'm getting started on my Philmont '08 equipment acquisitions, and I'm
wondering what the consensus is on the subject of Synthetic versus Down
for sleeping bags (I don't recall having seen this discussion here
recently).

In '05 I took a 25 degree synthetic, and it took up about 1/3 the space
of my Osprey Crescent 110 Internal Frame pack. I also roasted every
night.

So I'm thinking of getting a 40 degree down bag, but one of my fellow
advisors will spend the entire trek asking me, "what if it gets wet?"

What does the collected wisdom of this august body have to say about
down sleeping bags at Philmont?

YIS,
