REI puts it this way: "Down always wins in terms of weight,
compressibility, warmth and durability".
What REI doesn't say is that synthetics win if initial cost (not cost
divided by years of use), allergies to down, or you anticipate trouble
keeping your bag dry are the main considerations.
An equipment spreadsheet that I put together for my troop has some
quantitative (and some qualitative data for useful life) from PHD
Designs, a high end bag manufacturer in the UK.
I've done a quick port of the graphs in that spreadsheet to a Google
