After the monsoon trek in 2004 where my personal smellables were wet or
damp every morning, I found a waterproof drawstring bag (maybe 6" by 10")
at REI for my personal smellables. It is awesome and when I recommended it
to our trek members, many folks went out and bought the same item. So we
had like 6 bags, all the same rust color, in our trek this year <g>! I
have now attached a leather fob to mine so I can easily pick it out of the
bunch <g>!
We have used the Philmont bear bags on all three of our treks and never had
an issue with them. Here in Colorado, and I know it sounds funny, but in
the summer we are generally backpacking too high (in altitude) for
significant bear issues. And in the spring/fall, the bears aren't too
active yet, or we are too LOW to be of much problem. We just string up the
food only (and have some nice Gortex meal bags for these) and leave
personal smellables in our packs (which are outside the bearmuda triangle,
of course). I guess we figure we are always less than day's hike from the
vehicles, so if a bear gets into someone's pack and trashes it, we just
hike back to the vehicles and leave. The trees at Colorado's high
altitudes are mostly short pines and spruces and we generally have crummy
luck finding good branches and locations for our bear bags. So we do our
best. I guess we figure gear is replaceable, people are not. Of course,
this approach isn't possible at Philmont. YIS. Mike Conkey ('76, '02,
'04 and '07).

We always take Wal-Mart mesh laundry bags, and use Philmont's rope. The
bags are very light & compressable, and about $6 each, or were 5 years ago.
Everyone packs their personal smellables in ziplock bags or the equivalent
to protect from rain.
