Well, I think I'm all ready to go to AA in September.
I was looking for the two patches I got in my first ever patch tradeat Philmont in 1959. I knew nothing about patch trading, but decided to cut off my council patch from my green poplin official BSA jacket and do some trading when a friend told me that patch was worth two good ones. Well in the first round I traded one for one for another council patch. NOt wanting to geel let down by only getting one patch for it, the next trade I traded for two patches. Both were cub scout pow wow patches.atch.
On reflection of my trip on the way home I decided patch trading might not be my forte adn I'd better stick to camping, cooking, hiking and canoeing skills. I never looked back and have stuck to that decision to this very day.
But a weeks free labor for two cub scout pow wow patches kinda sorta interests me.
Mark offerered to do all the camp chores for my wife in return for my entire patch collection so I'm looking for both of them to give him. I mean a bargain is a bargain.
Well, deep down in the box of patches and merit badge sashes etc, I located my New Mexico State Fishing license that I bought at Philmont in 1959. On August 13, 1959 to be exact.
I think I'll take it along and maybe they will honor it this year you think?
Anyway, it lists my name and address and height as 5-0 and weight as 95 lbs. How is that for a big Texan. It goes on to list my eyes as blue and my hair as brown which they still are and I'm a male. It aslo states the amount paid is $ 1.10 and it is license number 829 Special Temporary Ten Day Fishing License Philmont Scout Ranch.
It was the first fishing license I ever had to buy adn I can remember like it was yesterday being proud to be old enough to have to have a license to fish.
Some things change and some things do not, but right now I can't wait for another three years to pass so I can buy a Texas "exempt" fishing license at a reduced rate for us old fellows.
My Philont fishing license goes on to state "Valid during open fishing season for 10 days from date hereof in waters on the Philmont Scout Ranch in Colfax County, New Mexico.
I knew I was the smallest boy on our trek, but I did not remember that I was a dimunitive 5-0 and 95 lbs. Therefore I can say without reservation that little guys do just fine at Philmnont. It's not the stature but the heart in a Scout.
Ninety five pounds is the weight of a filled Gregory internal frame pack isn't it?
