Why not stay in Albuquerque or Colorado Springs and do something first.
There isn't a big rush to get to Philmont for checkin.

Subject: [Philmont]: early arrival
Hello all,
We are heading to Philmont in July. We were able to secure a great air
fare by leaving a day earlier which means we will have an extra night
before our "official" arrival at Philmont. Right now, we are debating
between staying at base camp or at one of the motels in Cimarron that
first night . It is my understanding that early arrivals at Philmont
are somewhat discouraged and that we would likely be staying in trail
tents as opposed to the platform tents (especially since there will be
23 of us). If that's the case, I would be inclined just to stay in
Cimarron instead, rather than staying in the meadow in trail tents then
packing everything back up and moving into platform tents the following
day. Afternoon thunderstorms could put a damper on things as well.
Has anyone arrived at Philmont early in recent years and been able to
get platform tent space? Does anyone know how much they charge for an
extra night in base camp plus meals? Also, does anyone have any
information about lodging in Cimarron (I'm looking at the Kit Carson
Inn, but I'm open to suggestions...)?
I appreciate any advice and/or recommendations. Thanks for your help.
