and they, of course, could not accommodate every request and don't
necesarily guarantee anything. Yes, there are fees, as others have
responded. On my last 2 Expeditions, in 98, & 00, I didn't even try to stay
early at CHQ and elected to spend the night in Cimarron. It costs more, but
you avoid the hassle and uncertainty of maybe having to set up trail tents
in the "meadow" which we had to do in 96. I was in CHQ in July 98 during an
unexpected 2-hr monsoon-type storm that flooded & flattened every trail tent
in that area. (Of course, that can happen anywhere on the Ranch.)

I've stayed at the Cimarron Inn & RV Park with rooms in the $62 - $70 (incl
tax) range w/ 3 to 4 per room. After consulting with others, I have
reservations for next summer at the Kit Carson Inn for slightly under $60
per room. They seemed to be a bit friendlier to Philmont crews. I've heard
of some crews staying at the St. James, but don't have specifics on price -
I would guess more than the others. If you wanted to stay near Taos,
there's a great youth hostel there and quite reasonable. And I suppose
there is reasonable lodging in Raton.

Hope this helps a little. YIS,
