I have a thermorest and the chair kit, but I used an ensolite gardening knee pad
for the seat and just used the fabric back. The ensolite pad was acquired at
Home Depot for about $3 if memory serves me correctly; it's about 24" square and
about 1" thick. I tried the arrangement on one of our shakedown hikes and it
worked well. I kept the whole thing under the top flap on my pack. Here's why I
liked it:

When we stopped for a pack's off break, lunch etc. I could get out my chair and
have a nice seat with a back without having to unroll my thermorest, didn't have
to worry about poking a hole in my sleeping pad (the ensolite is puncture
proof), didn't have to drag my bed out of the tent to set down, and if anything
got spilled on the chair, it could go up in the bear bag and I wouldn't a) be
without a sleeping pad or b) be inadvertently bringing a "smellable" into my
tent. The whole thing might weigh about half a pound or so, and I thought it
was well worth it.

I still had to set on the ground or on a log, but at least I had a cushion for
my butt and a backrest. As for the lack of a padded backrest, most folding camp
chairs only have fabric anyway, so it was no big deal.

Hope this helps and,

Happy Trails,

Roy Fisher
