We used a central fund and then returned the extra when complete.
Let the crew decide if they want to go the other way or not.
If so have the ASM be in charge of the getting the money for each event.

I've looked through Selden's pages and have subscribed to this list for a
while, and I have a question that hasn't been addressed in either---
establishing a "crew fund" for common expenses. The Troop one of my sons
went with this past summer collected $75 from each participant for a
central crew fund. From this they paid for gas for autos (it's about 260
miles to the train), stove fuel, 30-06 ammo, crew water bottles for dry
camps, first aid & sewing kits, root beer in horse camps, imprinted crew
shirts & bandanas, ranger "gift", pizza in Raton at the end of their trip,
and the list goes on. I have an ASM who'll be bringing his son on our trip
next summer who absolutely disagrees with a central fund of any kind. He
says each particpant should pay his own expenses, and doesn't want an extra
t-shirt. He thinks hen we buy gas for cars all the riders in that car
should chip in for the expense. Each should bring whatever he needs. Has
anyone else faced a situation like this? What do you think of a central
"fund"? I really don't want to mess around with asking Scouts to pay for
filling my gas tank! I'm open to suggestions. And, by the way, this is
the ASM to whom I delegated the Philmont planning..... but he doesn't read
this list!
