Hi Tom:
 
Not in my personal experience. We had four adults on our 2001 trek. I never got
the impression from our ranger or any staff that they objected to having four
adults. I think it is best to have four in case of injury to an adult. If there
were only two in the crew and one gets hurt, you are short an adult and Philmont
would have to assign a ranger to your crew. Go with four. Grown-ups need to have
fun
too:-)
