The Albuquerque Journal dated July 25, 2000 gave the figure of four scouts being scratched or bitten and two adults who were trespassing on ranch property were trapped in their car by a bear during the 2000 season. The Albuquerque Journal dated June 28, 2
001 had two scouts scratched or bitten in the 2001 season. There have been no deaths associated with these attacks.

I have an email from the old Philmont list dated June 12, 2000 that lists the 9 camper fatalities at Philmont since 1971.

1985 - Fall at Window Rock (youth)
1985 - Heart Attack at the Tooth (adult)
1988 - Lightning strike at Cimarroncito (youth on a ridge during a storm)
1989 - Heart attack at Cimarroncito (adult)
1990 - Asthma attack at Abreu(youth)
1992 - Heart attack at Base Camp (adult)
1996 - Heart attack at Aguila (training conference, no hiking involved, adult)
1999 - Asthma attack at Harlan (youth)

Philmont medical form has gotten much more detailed requiring your doctor to assess whether you can handle the physical stress associated with a trek. Philmont has also toughened it's stand on overweight advisors and youth. During the summer of 2000, twe
nty-six advisors and six youths who did not meet the weight criteria were not allowed on the trail and were sent home. In the summer of 2001, that number was reduced to seventeen adults and seven youths.

More good stuff like this in the Philmont Advisor's Guide.
