Chris,
Your arguments work well for your situation. I too believe that we should
get the max number of youth possible to Philmont. That said.
Not every council has "12 full crews at Philmont" in my council we have 1
council crew per year. Last year I was the primary advisor for that crew.
Think not only about the actual trip but also the training as well. If I
would have relied on only 1 other advisor and either one of us were unable
to make a training event we would have needed to cancel the event. Or
worse yet, we suffer an injury in the month prior to leaving. Would we
have had a trained individual adult ready to step in. Not in our case. If
a youth is unable to attend at the last minute it would not cause the
entire trek to be canceled. If one advisor is missing from your situation
the trek would not be canceled. If we had planned on only 2 advisors (we
had 3) and if one was unable to attend the rest of us most likely would not
have been able to get on the train. We also never had to cancel a training
event because of lack of 2 deep leadership.
The point is, for some crews more than 2 advisors makes sense.

This is an issue I feel strongly about so I'm going to soap box it.
