Hi everyone! I have 2 comments. First on the number of adviors. It is strongly
encouraged to take only about 3 adviors and no more. The whole idea of Philmont
is for the youth to get the best exprience possible. Yes, it may be "fun" for
the adviors, but often times, even at some of the programs advisors are
discouraged to particpate. (Such as challenge event camps). A good example of
this is how they pick a crew leader from the crew to lead, and not an advisor.
It may be a mean thing to say, but the point of Philmont is for the youth to
have a great exprience and have fun, and not the advisors. For every advisor
over two that you bring, you are knocking out at least one youth from exprience
Philmont.

Also.. on this bear topic. There have been 5 bear attacks in the past 2 summers.
3 in 2000 and 2 in 2001. No one was killed. But what people don't seem to
understand that if you have an incident like that, if a bear comes in contact
with anyone in the crew, the WHOLE crew is then pulled off the trail and not
allowed to return. Depending on the situation they many not even recieve their
arrowhead patches. Why risk it? Follow directions and put everything in the bear
bag. Philmont does not like to go and chase down a bear that has attacked
anyone. It is more work for the staff and of course the Bear is killed. It's a
sad sad thing.
