This statement is not unilaterally true. While a crew is pulled from the
trail at the time of the incident, it is not 100% true that the whole crew
is disallowed from continuing the trek. If the situation is deemed *not* to
be based upon an obvious irresponsiability of the crew and *if* the crew
wishes to continue, Philmont will do everything they can to get that crew
back onto the trail.
It is also not true that every nuisance bear is killed. If a bear has shown
agression and/or had human contact, yes that bear will probably be put down.
A 'curious' bear on the other hand will most likely be relocated & given
another chance, depending upon what the situation seems to be with that
bear's behavior. There was at least one bear that came around the snack bar
last summer, and was relocated into the back country. Unfortunately, that
bear also exhibited the usual pattern once this starts happening & it found
it's way back to the snack bar & in spite of giving the bear another chance,
that bear showed it's behavior was not going to be rehabilitated via
relocation & was eventually put down.
Of course, the facts of this discussion have no bearing (no pun intended)
upon the need for crews to be fastidious with Philmont bear protocols.
