Re: [Philmont]: raingear and lights

Yes, Brent, the LED lights are great. If you want more than just the single-
bulb, coin size squeeze light, the 3-bulb versions are great. My favorite is
the Petzl Tikka ($35), 70 gram w/ batteries, with headband, and the Petzl Zipka
($45), 64 gram w/ batt, identical to Tikka except with pull-out cord to use as
headband, wrist or leg band. These are expensive options and may be more than
you really need at Philmont. But as a permanant piece of pers equip for the
long-range, they're great. Very light weight. Very bright light. Can easily
hike at night (tho not allowed at Philmont). Batteries (3 AAA) last a l-o-n-g
time, and bulbs almost forever. My son tells me of participants on his 3-month
NOLS expedition last spring whose batteries lasted the whole time. On the
other hand, some that had the comparable Princeton Tec 3-bulb (with 2 AA
batteries) (heavier design) had to replace batteries.

Whether or not you would want only a single bulb LED squeeze light is a
personal preference. Yes, it could easily be all you need, but I really would
want something a bit more. I tell my crews that the *biggest* light they
should ever need or take is a mini-mag (2 AA), but I highly recommend the LEDs.

Funny, one of the official Philmont videos about equipment prep mentions
flashlights and shows a Scout with one of those 4 D-cell mag lights like a
policeman carries and can double as a billy-stick or weapon. Just gotta laugh
at that one. Maybe it'd be good for bear defense.

Are the LED mini lights a good option for Philmont instead of regular 'light'
flashlights?
