I can't speak to the non-thermarest pads working. But I can tell you that I
have a thermarest 3/4 length pad that I took to Philmont, along with the
insert chair. I love my thermarest for sleeping on, and would not consider
using a different pad. My chair, however...
I found that sitting on the ground was hard on my knees. Yes, my knees. I
always felt as if my knees were hyper-extended when I had to sit with my
legs straight out. Which I frequently needed to do to have any lap to put
things on (such as food!). Trying to sit on some of the logs around a
firering was okay until I needed to get up. Then the chair would fall on
the ground. Also, I couldn't take advantage of the backrest when I was
sitting on a log. There is no balance.
I would recommend the small, three-legged stools that collapse. I am
switching myself. They collapse, are fairly small, and can be set up
quickly and easily in many locations. The ground doesn't even have to be
level. A couple people on our crew had one. I got to sit on them from time
to time. I felt it was much better.
Just my experience. Perhaps someone else feels differently...

Subject: [Philmont]: Sleeping Pads
Sat around the flaming stove on the prep hike last night and was discussing
gear we were planning on taking. Now being someone who doesn't like to spend
all my money, has anyone ever tried to use a non-thermarest pad in the
tthemarest chair convertor? I'm thinking about getting the campmor version
that is $20 cheaper but is identical as far as we can tell. Thanks for the
help.
