There's a scale at the bus shelter where you get picked up on your way
to the trail.
We made sure our little guys went nowhere near it! ;^}

They all did fine -- they were used to carrying significant packs on
regular troop trips.

Karl, Here's an interesting story I recently got while discussing a
light- weight, small 15 y-o Scout in one of my 2002 crews with a friend
of mine who
was a ranger last summer.

Quote -
I had a kid in one of my crews last summer that didn't even break 100
pounds,
so the medic gave him a hard time at the recheck-- said his pack had to
be
under 24 pounds at all times, or he would get pulled off the trail. I
made
sure he was realy light when we caught the bus to the turnaround-- the
medic
threatened to show up with a scale. We had to distribute all of his
water and
most crew gear to others to get him under 24, but once on the trail, he
carried
as much or more, and when I caught up with them a few days later, I
learned he
was doing fine.
End Quote

So I guess you probably ought to condsider the possibility of some
similar
warning/advice at the medical recheck. I'm sure Philmont has reasons
for being
strict for various things, and maybe there was a bad incident with a
light- weight kid in the recent past. I'd be prepared to listen and
follow what
Philmont tells you w/o major argument - as in following all recommended
protocols.
