I've been subscribed to this list (the original one) since it began. Last
year was particulary good in that those who were new to the Philmont
experience asked many questions, which were then followed by informative
answers. As the 2001 Philmont season approached, many first timers wrote
that they had found the service very helpful in their trek preparation.
 
On occasion, when a subject thread was beaten into the ground, Doug Gentry
( the moderator) would politey say that's enought, let's move on to
something else. If it continued with more of the same, he simply filtered
the responses out. That's the purpose of a moderator. I agree that this
shouldn't evolve into a chat room; there are plenty of those to go around.
