[Philmont]: Digital Cameras

Before leaving on Camp Tour 2001 last summer I looked long and hard
for the perfect digital camera. Since my favorite 35mm lens is a 28-200mm
zoom I knew that even a 3X zoom just wouldn't do the job. I settled on an
Olympus C-700 with 10X zoom (38-380 35mm equivalent). The camera is
lightweight and seemingly durable. My wife and I took very nearly 20,000
shots at 27 camps with two C-700s and never had a bit of trouble.

Most digital cameras come with 'make-do' batteries and a pitiful amount
of memory. To correct these deficiencies we purchased 1700 mAh NiMH
batteries
and a quick charger from Thomas Distributing
http://www.thomas-distributing.com/.
They last for about 200 shots, many with fill flash. We also picked up 128mb
Smart Cards for increased memory which gave us about 256 0.5-mb shots per
card.

The C-700 runs $599 almost everywhere and is the least expensive of the
big zooms that I found. Resist the temptation to "save big bucks" at the
on-line NY camera dealers. They are, with a very few exceptions,
notoriously crooked.

CompUSA had the C-700's predecessor, the C-2100 Ultra Zoom on sale last
week for $499. It's a bit bulkier but it does come with NiMH batteries/
charger and a feature called image stabilization which is handy is you
are zoomed out to 10X and hanging from a tree for the "perfect shot".
