Some people really don't like waiting that long to start thinking
about what they want to do. You usually can use the previous year's
itineraries to get a pretty good idea of what treks will be available.
Some details probably will be different (new trails will have been
finished this past summer, fires may make some areas unusable, etc)
but it's very unlikely that they'll make major changes again like
they did for the summer of 2000.

Troop 62 of Winter Park, FL, has put a copy of Philmont's "Treks 2001"
on the Web at
http://www.bsatroop62.org/Philmont%202001/2001%20Itinary%20Guide/Itinerary%20Guide%20for%202001.htm

Again, previous years' editions of the "Guidebook to Adventure" can be
very useful. The 1999 edition, for example, has been provided by Troop 4
of Pasadena, CA, as a large PDF file at
http://www.bsatroop4.org/philmont/guidebook.pdf

They provide a copy of the "2001 Council and Unit Planning Guide" at
http://www.bsatroop4.org/philmont/planning.pdf

Mike Floyd's turkey roasting bag method is described on the Web at
http://www.geocities.com/troop764x/phil_turkeybags.html

I hope this helps a little.
