RE: [Philmont] - philmont Digest - V01 #58

I was an adult advisor on Trek 22 this summer (2001). We brought along
a GPS, and I thought it was a fun item to tinker with. My co-advisor
and I stayed up past 1:00 AM entering waypoint locations the night
before departing from the Philmont base camp (DAY 1). Then a quick slip
of the fingers the next day erased them all! Oops... Still, it was fun
to display the track we'd traveled each day and compare how it looked
versus what the topo map showed. The GPS would store a history of our
locations, sampled periodically as we hiked. There was not always
perfect agreement between the map and the track shown on the GPS.

No way was it necessary for staying on course for our trek. The map and
compass worked just fine, and the GPS served as a fun backup to verify
our location. Be sure to get a topo map from the Philmont Trading Post
for the section(s) your trek goes through. Ours (trek 22) needed both
the south and the central maps.

>> So any good suggestions to make sure I know where we are going? Did
a GPS help?
