I am also one who encourages the crew to not mix all the ingredients into
one pot. The soup, although quite often high in sodium, adds extra fluids. I
actually prefer it at the end of the meal as is the custom in China, but
that's another story.
On my last trek we were told by our Ranger on his night to demonstrate
cooking that "this is what the Philmont Rangers recommend", as he poured all
the Lipton soup into the dinner without getting a concensus. So my question
is why? First if all, they could save some money if they didn't even give
out the soup if it's just to be thrown in with the main course. Who decides
these things? And so what if it's officially endorsed by the Ranger corp.
It's your trek. Now don't get your dander up, this is not an attempt at
Ranger bashing! I just don't see why if they give you a 3 course meal you
shouldn't have 3 seperate courses.
