You will be able to give your trash to staff members at your
commissary pickups. Most treks will have two commissary
pickups. So in most cases your crew will only be carry food and
trash for a maximum of four days. In regards to the sumps, their
main purpose is to discard liquids from the meal and dishwashing
water. This is one of the reasons why bears are attracted to the
sumps because crews sometimes try to discard food particles into
the sumps. The sumps have a screen on them. But unfortunately
crews have been known to remove the screen to get rid of food
particles. Go to our troop web site below and click on
Philmont/Backpacking button and then scroll down to the button for
Philmont pictures and then click on "bears" you will see a sump
that was destroyed at Red Hills camp in 2000. We were rerouted to
this camp because of the bear incident on Phillips in 2000. This is
one of the reasons why our crews use the "turkey bag" concept to
eliminate food particles on the sump.
Going back in 2002!!!!!!!!!
