[Philmont]: One Pot Cooking

I know this thread has gone on beyond its time, but I would like to go back to Signe's post earlier last week. Philmont Rangers are responsible to ensure
that each crew going out on the trail has the necessary skills and equipment to have a safe and successful trek. You would be absolutely amazed at the disparity in backcountry skills exhibited by the crews that arrive at Philmont each year. That is why t
hey spend two and a half days with your crew. The training your crew receives from your Ranger is based upon the
best practices that Philmont feels are necessary to allow 20,000 campers to use the ranch each summer. The training syllabus is reviewed each year prior to the ranch opening up to ensure that it is as up to date as possible. Philmont's backcountry protoc
ols may even change during a camping season like they did last summer because of the increased bear activities. So to
question "why are the rangers telling the youth what is best" is just plain wrong. You may disagree with your ranger, but arguing with him or her in front of the crew is a bad idea. If there is something about Philmont's backcountry protocols that you d
o not like, please take it up with the administration. Your Ranger is doing what he or she has been trained to do. Although I personally do not like cooking in a bag since
it adds another piece of trash, I don't think you will find a Ranger that will object to your crew doing it.

The discussions on one pot cooking have been interesting. However, I don't think thre is a Ranger out that would insist on putting the dessert in the same pot with the rest of the meal. Our crews typically throw the veggies into the same pot with the mai
n course. It just makes sense. Why not since your veggies are going right in the same cup with the main course. We may or may not throw the soup in with the main course too. Again, it is not a hard set of rules.
