> So to question "why are the rangers telling the youth what is best" is just plain wrong. You may disagree with your ranger, but arguing with him or her in front of the crew is a bad idea.
Cooking technique, like most everything else involved in backpacking, is a matter of preference. Most of the crew advisors and crew leaders that subscribe to this list will have personal biases regarding the way things are done. These may or may not coin
cide with the "Philmont way" things are done. But Coop's point is very well made.
If you know going in that the way your crew prefers to do something is contrary to Philmont's suggested method (a side benefit of this list) I would recommend that sometime early on in your crew's Ranger training - like right after the three of you meet -
the crew leader and/or crew advisor have a quiet, private discussion with your Ranger explaining the differences and why. This discussion can save a lot of embarrasement and hard feelings. It can also simplify the
Ranger's job in the training phase, plus if the Ranger goes along (and if it is not contrary to Philmont policy, safe practices or resource preservation/management they should), it makes the crew leader look like he/she really does know what they are doing
and have been trying to tell the crew.
Happy Trails
