[Philmont]: Tentage: Weight per person

The mindset for PhilTents is two person tents.

This is partially because Philmont furnishes 2 person tents and partially
because most think smaller is lighter.

Philmont also discourages larger tents in that the footprint is larger and
supposedly more difficult to find a suitable tent spot large enough to set
them up.

Never mind the first above. It's just from not thinking outside the box.

On the second thought above, last July we never had difficulty finding a
place for the 4 person tent our crew carried.

The four girls on trek carried a 4 perrson Eureka Timberline tent. Total
tent, fly, pole and stake weight was 8 pounds. Divided by 4 people, this
amounts to 2 lbs each.

Yeah, yeah you say that four people in it is a little snug. Well, you aren't
staying in the Hilton, but it will be the Hilton of tents on the trail and
the lightest one per person probably too.

When it rained, those ladys had the one place everyone else envied. There
was a LOT of room in it for card games, bull shooting and all else that
occupies tents in rainy weather.

It's almost impossible to find tentage in any form or fashion that is less
than 2 lbs per person. And this in a tent that sells for $139.95 new. That
is $35.00 per person tent cost and you still have the tent when the trek is
over.

My point is not to suggest this is the ideal tent, but to suggest that you
think outside the box. Look to wisdom other than the conventional. Things
other than what is recommended by others often meets your needs better.

Do keep in mind that if it is the finest thing since sliced bread, somebody
has surely tried it before.
