RE: [Philmont]: Tentage: Weight per person

When I was in Chile in 98 for the World Jamboree, the German staff had the
most interesting tents. They were canvas material as I remember, which I
would not use for backpacking, but the most interesting thing was that
everyone had a section and a pole and the tents fit together with pegs
through holes to make a tent condo of sorts. They looked quite Middle
Eastern when put together as they were black, like something in a Bedouin
camp. One big tent, many people. Obviously this might not work at Philmont
or on the rock face of a Yosemite outcropping or with leaders and youth
sleeping in close quarters, but it does cause one to think outside of the
box. My sons old troop used 6 man wall tents for car camping trips. Id
never suggest these for backpacking, but one has to wonder if John Ls post
has merits. You can play a decent card game in a hailstorm with 5-7 other
folks and save weight, too. If youve ever seen a Stevenson Warmlite tent
catalog you get a feeling for just how close everyone can get in a tent. No
flames, Im not suggesting this for a Scout unit!

I have tried and like Coops cooking pot method with two 4-qt pots to boil
water instead of one 8 qt. We just have to think outside of the box as they
say. Tents as well.
