My foggy memory says there is a rule about the square footage of tent required per boy.
Based on that research you might want to consider squeezing several kids into a tent. You have a fly on the trip and 99% of the time the fly is the center of activity. Most times at philmont, the time spent in tents is purely for sleeping.
I spent several days coupled/trapped in Biblers which are 48" wide by 82 inches long. For sleeping they are wonderful.
If you really want to save weight, and you have a large two person tent, see if three kids will fit. If you group repairs to tents and "does stuff" this idea is a little tougher, but little of that seems to happen at Philmont.
