Very true.
On two occasions on our July 2002 it did occur. Once on layover day at
Apache in a two hour driving hail storm. It covered the ground about an inch
thick. Looked like snow. A neat treat for us Southerners.
Did I retire to the tent? Nope! My daughter, the other girls and I tiptoed
through the trees taking advantage of all the noise and walked up within
slapping distance of three elk and about 4-5 mule deer in the hailstorm right
on the edge of the campsite area. All the other crew members "retired" to
the tents and card games.
The other "tent time" was about day 8 on a really rainy evening. It rained
for the last three hours on the trail, it rained while we set up camp, it
rained while we cooked UNDER the tarp, it rained while we cleaned up, hung
the bear bags and most of the rest of the night. The entire crew spent a
well earned long nights sleep in the tents that evening and night.
Tent time other than sleeping is unusual but it does happen. Plan for it.
