Re: [Philmont]: Tents

I'm like Mike, I have a definate preference towards Eureka tents. My Troop
uses Mountain Pass 2XT, and Mountain Pass 4XT tents. They are very similar
to the Apex XT tents. The XT means the tent has a full fly with a vestibule
on each side. We used the Apex tents for a while in our Troop. However, the
Mtn Pass uses Aluminum Poles, instead of Fiberglass. This saves a good bit
of weight. I was concerned about the poles bending or breaking at first, but
they have held up for several years. We took some on our Trek to Philmont,
and they performed perfectly. They stood up to hail, and a windstorm on top
of Mount Phillips. We have used them in weather as cold as 15'F. With the
tent zipped up, it was around 40'f inside that night. As you know, it gets
hot and humid down here on the coast in Texas in the summer (90'F and
90%humidity). These tents can be opened up, and have lots of ventilation.
We like the versatility, and durability. We had one problem, and Eureka
replaced the tent quickly.

If you keep an eye on Campmor, they sell them for a good price every year.
If you are looking at the Apex, it is usually priced very well also.
