RE: [Philmont]: Tents

We never got around to having any shakedown campouts (Most of them had been
on high adventure LNT trips though). So I didn't know what the boys were
using for tents. They were all over 15 and I figured they should learn to
fend for themselves. I purchased a Apex II 3 man tent for two adults and
we were very happy (poles are on the heavy side) One scout brought a crappy
Target pop up and got wet every time it rained. I argued with the scout
before we hit the trail so he knew not to complain when he got wet (it was
very light though, I think around 2 lbs). Phil tents worked well too. We
all had a good time and came back. Don't sweat the small stuff. Yes we had
hail, rain and wind. No problem...deal with it.
I don't even think I looked at a map the whole week. Scouts handled it well.
No additional training for that either. They did have some trouble
estimating distances but adapted by asking other hikers what the times were
for hiking from one camp to another.
I would suggest looking at everything on the list, save some bucks by using
Philmont equipment and have a good time.

To share the load, one person carried the main tent and aluminum poles
and the other person carried the fly and the ground sheet. I use
aluminum tent pegs which also reduces the weight.

This is the 'normal' method of dividing a tent between those who share
it at Philmont. So what about those who by design of the crew are the
odd-one-out having to tent alone therefore carry the whole of tent parts
& is penalized? I will answer that maybe yes & maybe no. Tentage, in
my opinion is crew gear, and as such the "total" crew gear weight should
be considered when dividing the crew gear amongst it's members. The one
who must solo tent (opposed to those who choose to do so for personal
reasons) should not be penalized by carrying more crew gear weight. If
they have a whole tent, they should carry less of other items so the
approximate weight division is equal in the crew.
