I agree with Signe on this.
We ran into similar issues on our trek. Early in our planning, we discussed
what was crew gear, and what was personal gear. Tents, pots, stoves, fuel,
and similar items were weighed, and discussed. We also planned how the
weight should be distributed in advance. Some of the boys were bigger, and
in better shape, so they carried more weight than smaller Scouts. Same
concept with our adults. Those who were in better shape carried more weight.
We also encouraged the Scouts to figure out ways to cut weight. Aluminum
tent pegs, convertible pants, etc. cut down our weight also. By doing all
of this in advance, and during our shakedowns, we had no issues when we
arrived at Philmont.
