I'll second that statement. I am a confessed gear junkie. I'm a bit
different from a lot of my women friends. Malls bore me, but take me to an
outdoor store & I'm in hog heaven.

I've been scouting & backpacking for awhile now, and my personal gear has
'evolved' over time. I haven't just gone out & bought everything at once &
what I pack with today is very different from the items I had for my first
trek because "light, light, light" has become my theme & I've built (or
reduced) my pack based on that. Other than making sure a pack fits
properly, with is very_important, I believe what is chosen to carry in the
pack is of more importance than brand & style of backpack, and there are
many home items that will work for your inside pack needs. The most recent
addition to my gear is a new food bowl - very simple one too. There is a
small round (about 4" diameter) Zip Lock brand disposable storage holds a
few cups, and is wide & shallow enough that I can lick my bowl clean without
using my nose. (yup, my first trek predates the politically correct method
taught today). It is extremely lightweight & durable & cheap. With the
clear plastic lip it has, I can run a sharpie under it to mark it with color
that doesn't wash off, so it is identified as mine.

This doesn't directly address packs, sleeping bags, boots, but hopefully
will get you thinking about the rest of your gear too. Follow the theme of
recent days: Think Outside the Box!
