as Signe says:

>Think Outside the Box!

There are many ways to approach the problem. Since you're just getting
started let me suggest you start by reading this
http://www.backpacking.net/
and
http://www.backpacking.net/makegear.html
to get yourself in the right mindset. The folks who put up these two
sites are the fanatics of the world doing things like making sure the
tags are cut out of clothing, looking for multiple uses for gear and
even cutting down and drilling holes in your toothbrush to reduce
weight. There is a world of gear out there but I think it is more
important to follow Signe's advice. I get fascinated by gear, too, but
knowing that there are solutions like the Zip lock bowls, and duct tape
for everything, and that a synthetic chamois from Wal-mart is just as
good as a PackTowl and much less expensive will go a long way to getting
outside the box.

Once you get the right mindset then go to www.ScoutDirect.com and
www.campmor.com and other places that give Scout discounts.

All the planning is part of the adventure.
